One of the best ways to decrease harbor congestion and air pollution is to use trains rather than trucks to move cargo. That is why we support the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) proposal to build a rail terminal a short hop from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

For over 100 years, BNSF has been both a service provider and community member in Southern California, promoting commerce and supporting community organizations – a practice it follows in all regions where its railroad operates. Although our primary service is transportation, giving back to the community and supporting our employees who volunteer their time is a fundamental value at BNSF.

BNSF's operations in Southern California provide vital services to businesses and we maintain a strong local commitment to every neighborhood we serve. Not only do many of our employees live, work and raise their families in the community, but we are privileged to work in a business that improves communities in a very direct way. Making our economy stronger and our communities cleaner is a central focus for us.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Foundation, the philanthropic arm of BNSF Railway Company, awards grants to organizations in communities served by BNSF in 28 states and throughout Southern California. These grants support non-profit programs ranging from youth activities to public safety, environmental, human development, education and the arts, including the United Way, Boys & Girls Club, International Trade Program at Banning High School and many other local charities.

BNSF has demonstrated its strong commitment to the community through significant and ongoing charitable efforts, including support for the following non-profit organizations:
  • Port of Los Angeles High School
  • San Pedro and Peninsula YMCA
  • Comprehensive Child Development (along with other children’s charities through the Santa Claus Express)
  • Gang Alternatives Program
  • American Diabetes Association
  • Los Angeles Conservation Corps (LACC)
  • Long Beach Fire Department
  • Rancho Los Amigos Foundation
  • South Shores Elementary School
  • Long Beach Police Department
  • The Beacon House
  • Boys and Girls Club of the LA Harbor
  • Friends of Banning's Landing
  • Arts Council of Long Beach
BNSF also supports local organizations, including the Lions Club, CALMITSAC, Chambers of Commerce, HAIC, the Central City Association, LAEDC, FuturePorts and the California League of Cities.

In Southern California, BNSF gave more than $150,000 in 2006, including $20,000 to the Wilmington YMCA for its new Comprehensive Learning Center and $75,000 to the new Port of Los Angeles High School (POLAHS). BNSF’s financial contribution will equip a classroom at the high school with the latest educational technology.

BNSF is pleased to support a program that recognizes the importance of California’s ports to the global economy, while promoting the future of the port industry through the educational growth of individual students.

In addition, BNSF’s Special Train in the spring benefited the Boys & Girls Club, while the Holiday Express hosted children from local hospitals and children’s organizations for a train ride with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
