THE INCREASED ADVANTAGES OF RAIL
BNSF Railway and other U.S. railroads continue to improve their fuel efficiency and are becoming an even more fuel-efficient (and environmentally-friendly) way to haul freight in this time of ever-changing gasoline and diesel prices. Trains now move a ton of freight an average of 436 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel and they’ve increased their fuel efficiency by 80 percent over the past 25 years. A single intermodal train can take up to 280 trucks off highways (making room for 1,100 cars), improving air quality, saving energy and reducing congestion.
As a result of recent collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency and locomotive manufacturers, Tier 4 locomotives will reduce emissions of particulate matter by 90 percent and nitrogen oxide by 80 percent. BNSF has also improved its greenhouse gas emissions intensity (grams per ton mile) by 8% in the last nine years.

BNSF HONORED BY FORTUNE AND LATINA STYLE MAGAZINE
In recent weeks, BNSF Railway has been recognized by two leading magazines for its industry leadership and commitment to diversity.
BNSF: World’s Most Admired Companies
Fortune magazine named BNSF Railway one of the World’s Most Admired Companies for 2009. Fortune’s annual ranking of the World’s Most Admired companies is perhaps the most highly regarded measurement of corporate reputation.
With the assistance of survey partners Hay Group, a global management consulting firm, Fortune covered 64 industries – 39 from the U.S. and 25 international. Hay Group surveyed executives, directors and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine areas, including innovation, social responsibility and financial soundness. In order to be designated as one of the World’s Most Admired, the company’s score had to rank in the top half of its industry.
BNSF: One of 50 Best Companies for Latinas
For the seventh year in a row, Latina Style magazine selected BNSF Railway as one of the 50 Best Companies for Latinas to work for in the United States.
To determine its top 50 companies, Latina Style researched over 800 U.S. corporations, using criteria chosen by its readers as important to them in the workplace. Some areas of assessment include: the number of Latina executives and board members; the availability of mentoring programs, educational opportunities, job retraining, alternative work policies, affinity groups and dependent/child care support; the quality of employee benefits; and how the company manages women’s issues and Hispanic relations.
Ed C. McFalls, BNSF’s assistant vice president of human resources and diversity, notes, “Diversity has evolved into an integral part of BNSF’s culture and business climate. We appreciate the recognition that Latina Style magazine has given BNSF over the years and trust our ongoing commitment to diversity will keep us in their spotlight.”
