ALL ABOARD BNSF'S VINTAGE RAIL CARS

In late September, more than 200 West Long Beach residents who support SCIG boarded BNSF’s beautifully restored vintage rail cars to experience what first-class train travel was like in the 20th century. The invited guests were treated to a family-friendly event that featured face-painting, balloons and clowns. As the train moved through the Alameda Corridor, residents talked with BNSF representatives to provide input on the proposed soundwall, truck routes and job training program.

The event was one of 11 held over five days aboard BNSF's "Powder River," "Lake Superior" and "Glacier View" cars. In all, more than 700 people from local chambers of commerce, rotary clubs, the Port of Los Angeles High School, International Trade Education Program (ITEP) and local charitable organizations participated in events on the rail cars, which BNSF provided as part of its community service programming in Long Beach and Los Angeles.

Miller Children's Hospital and the Memorial Medical Center Foundation offered a dinner ride to help raise funds to complete the hospital’s $151 million expansion. Friends of the Banning Museum held a donor recognition reception to honor members whose contributions helped support the Banning Residence Museum’s educational programming and efforts to maintain the Victorian-era, 23-room mansion.

The rail cars are scheduled to return in December to host the "Santa Claus Express" for deserving children from various charitable organizations as part of BNSF’s annual holiday season events.

In the meantime, BNSF will be participating in the Port of Long Beach's 3rd Annual Green Port Fest on October 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m at the Port of Long Beach Administration Building (925 Harbor Plaza, Long Beach). In addition to information about SCIG and BNSF's other environmental initiatives, visitors will be able to test their skills on a real train simulator and ride aboard a miniature train. This event is free and open to the public.
