One of the best ways to decrease harbor congestion and air pollution is to use trains rather than trucks to move cargo. That is why we support the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) proposal to build a rail terminal a short hop from the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles.

  • Trains are 2-4 times more fuel efficient than trucks on a ton-mile basis.
  • Trains are 2-3 times cleaner than trucks on a ton-mile basis (for NOX and PM)
  • One intermodal train can take the equivalent of up to 280 trucks off our already congested highways.
  • By 2010, emissions around rail yards will be reduced by 65% from 2005 levels. No other mode of transportation in Southern California can claim such a substantial reduction from 2005 levels.
  • BNSF dispenses at least 90% low sulfur diesel into locomotives when fueling in California – six years earlier than required by federal regulations.
